Diamond Head, Oahu, Hawaii - Oahu's famous landmark

Diamond Head dominates the eastern sky line of Waikiki is the famous 761 foot high Pacific landmark and state monument of Diamond Head, an extinct volcano, which got it's name from British sailors back in the 1820's. The sailors thought they had discovered diamonds on its slopes, but which were, in fact, calcite crystals.

There is a steep and moderately difficult hike to the summit; the 1.4-mile return journey will take about 2 hrs. To enjoy the experience you need to be well prepared and make an early start - the park opens at 6.30 am.

There are a number of tunnels en route so you should bring a torch and it's advisable to take some bottled water, wear good walking shoes and a hat, as it can get hot on the trail path.

The 360-degree vista from the summit will certainly make it a worthwhile journey with views of Waikiki, Kapiolani Park, Koko Head, and the coastline to Barbers Point and the Waianae mountains. Below you will see the surfers catching the waves off Diamond Head Beach. Don't forget to bring your camera and binoculars.
